Overview of the music department
Music at Rowhill school is taught primarily as a practical and interactive subject, with an emphasis on listening, positive participation and group work. Students have the opportunity to use the full range of classroom instruments, drum kits, keyboards, guitars, percussion as well as world instruments or to use the DJ room to create mixes.
Students in Primary and the Transition hub have weekly lessons, and there is a Performing Arts option strand in the vocation hub. Students of all ages are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, contribute their own knowledge, and explore genres and styles that particularly interest them.
Music is very much a part of school life with assembly music, annual concert events both inside and outside of the school. Older students attend an after-school rock club in Longfield academy, and many have the opportunity to go on a variety of related visits to concerts, venues, musicals etc.
The staff team is highly specialist, with a guitar teacher, and two music producers who work with individuals and small groups in the purpose-built studio. Students have the opportunity to take part in the school band.
There are a number of annual events in school including:
- Halloween film project
- Primary and Secondary Christmas show
- Voice in a Million at Wembley Arena
- Summer showcase
- Rowhill’s got Talent
We have also participated in a number of collaborative large-scale performance events with The Big Reveal project and Ksent, a cooperative of special schools in Kent, with performances taking place in the Woodville Halls, Gravesend and Colyer-Fergusson Hall in Canterbury.
Qualifications offered include Bronze and Silver arts award, AQA unit awards and we will be offering RSL grade and performance certificates.

Rowhill School has been awarded the Artsmark Silver award in recognition of its commitment to creative learning. The Artsmark is the only creative quality standard for schools and education settings, accredited by Arts Council England. Artsmark ensures every young person can be creative and access a diverse, high-quality cultural education.
Amongst other feedback for our school, Artsmark wrote :
"'Rowhill School is to be commended for its commitment to providing a wide range of arts and cultural activities. You have also provided students with authentic cultural and artistic opportunities, whilst organising a range of opportunities for them to perform and showcase their talents.
It was good to read about the success your large-scale shows, with students acting, singing, supporting technical crew, in charge of lighting, sound engineering and as part of the set, costume and stage crew teams. You have worked in partnership with professional organisations including, Ksent educational cooperative and the 'Valuing Voices' project, which focused on professional dancers and visual artists collaborating with teachers in special schools. Both initiatives have enhanced the skills of teachers and pupils, whilst enabling them to explore these artforms further."
